Of classical construction, the church of Pontillas dates from 1790, as indicated by the stone located halfway up the facade of the tower. Its choir dates from the second half of the 17th century. The tower and the side face are punctuated with a bull's eye. The church is dedicated to Saint Martin.
The building borders a small cemetery surrounded by a stone wall, where stands a slain cross from 1622 in memory of six victims of the Thirty Years' War (17th century).

But who was this Saint Martin, of whom nearly 500 churches and chapels in Wallonia are dedicated to him and who has been venerated for seventeen centuries in our regions?
Martin was born in Hungary in the 4th century. From a military and pagan father, he was brought up in Pavia where his father was posted. Having become a soldier and a Christian himself, he went to garrison in Gaul and it was in Amiens, when he was only 18, that he performed his famous gesture of charity towards a poor man. In The Life of Saint Martin, Sulpice Sévère writes: "Thus, seizing the weapon he wore in his belt, he divided his chlamys (cloak) in two, gave a piece to the poor and dressed himself with the rest."
When Martin left the army - he was then 40 years old - it was to devote himself to his faith. He lives as a hermit near Poitiers, is joined by a few "brothers", creates the first monastery in Gaul and becomes bishop of Tours.
By evangelizing the Gallic provinces and by embodying Christian charity, in all its destitution, Saint Martin has become one of the most popular saints in our regions and that is why so many of our parishes are dedicated to him.
