Myriameter stones are survey markers. A myriameter (from ancient Greek μυριάς myrias "ten thousand" - cf. myriad) corresponds to 10,000 meters, i.e. 10 kilometers.
These historic milestones are placed every ten thousand meters to the right and left of the Rhine between Basel and Rotterdam.

On May 25, 1864 in Amsterdam - after the straightening of the Upper Rhine by Gottfried Tulla - the Central Commission for Rhine Shipping ordered a total survey of the Rhine flow for the first time, which began at the Middle Bridge in Basel (today's Rhine km 166, 6) and should end at the mouth of the Rhine. Members were the Rhine bordering states of Baden, Bavaria, France, Hesse, Nassau, the Netherlands and Prussia.

In 1867, the Central Commission decided to set marker stones, so-called myriameter stones, to mark the measurement results. The stones were made of Ibbenbüren sandstone in the approximate dimensions 120×50×50 cm and ended in a flat, four-sided pyramid. All four sides were labeled. The Rhine side bears the number of the stone in Roman numerals. Below this, the AP specification describes the height of the stone above the Amsterdams Peil (Amsterdam level, corresponds to NN), which is important for calculating the river gradient. On land, the distances from Basel and to Rotterdam were given. Furthermore, the distances to the nearest national borders are sometimes noted on the mountain or valley side. Originally there were stones painted black and white every ten kilometers on both sides of the Rhine. From 1883 they were replaced by state kilometer markings. They were temporarily valid until 1890. Today they will z. T. still as fixed points of

Yes, you can see it should be for measurement directly when driving on the Rhine.
