This forest was planted in the 1960s; Before that it was a lake and once even a sea. The Harderbos was created for timber production and later for recreation. Wide avenues and varied forest edges characterize the forest. Now nature is being allowed to take its course, dead wood is left behind and it is increasingly developing into a “primeval forest”.
