The Lake Vesuvius Backpacking Trail is a nearly 18-mile loop that can be experienced through an overnight backpacking tour, or shortened to a long day-hike by getting back on the Lakeshore Trail at the northern end of Lake Vesuvius. The Backpacking Trail was built in the 1930's by the Civilian Conservation Corps and takes hikers through moderately challenging terrain and landscapes varying from lakeside, open meadows, and dense, mature hardwood forests.
