Looking south from the road you will see Carrigaphooca Castle perfectly perched on a rock looking over the Sullane River.

The tower house was built by Dermot Mor MacCarthy sometime between 1436 and 1451 with the Mac Carthys engaging in constant debilitating warfare. They chose the side of the Crown in 1602 resulting in an attack from Donal Cam O'Sullivan Beare. After a long siege the wooden door of the castle burned down. O'Sullivan then retrieved a chest of Spanish gold he had presented to the MacCarthys some months prior in return for their support against the English.
