The Sacro Bosco di Bomarzo is the oldest sculpture park in the modern world. It was designed in the 16th century by the architect Pirro Ligorio commissioned by Prince Pier Francesco Orsini, lord of Bomarzo. The Sacro Bosco is also known as the Park of Monsters due to the presence of sculptures depicting mythological animals, deities and monsters scattered in a surreal natural landscape.
