The Roman theater of Sagunto was built around the 1st century in the Roman city of Saguntum, currently called Sagunto.
It was declared a National Monument in 1896. Its restoration in the 1990s, which gave it its current appearance, ignited a virulent controversy that ended up in court. In the summer, an important festival is celebrated, "Sagunt a escena".
Like most Roman theaters, and following the Greek model, it is located at the foot of a mountain or an elevation, taking advantage of its slope. The theater is located on the northern side of the Castellet hill. Built at the foot of the castle and the ancient Roman forum, it is part of the urban planning of Saguntum in the time of Emperor Augustus. Its north-east orientation, towards the Palancia valley, allows it to avoid the hot winds from the west and south, and at the same time take advantage of the cooler winds from the north and east.
