    De Paardekop is a large forest area. The area is higher than the surrounding area. This is clearly visible from the watchtower. The watchtower is 18 meters high and is open to the public.

    When the Peel still consisted entirely of peat, and was therefore soaking wet (peat is like a big sponge!), it was best to cross the area via the Paardekop. That connection can still be found on old maps. It was also called the Swarte baen or the Venrays path.

    It is not known where the name Paardekop comes from. There are different stories about it, for example that a great battle took place here in which many horses died as well as warriors. They would have been buried in a grave shaped like a horse's head. In any case, a battle hammer has been found in this area that is thousands of years old.
