Inserted in the collection Salento Bizantino komoot.it/collection/1811756/-salento-bizantino - It was originally a simple farmhouse belonging to the Monastery of the Basiliani. The name derives from the cult of Sant'Eufemia di Calcedonia, a Greek saint to whom the monastery was dedicated. With the abolition of the monastic complex, the farm continued to exist and to keep the ancient name; over time it developed into a small village not far from Tricase. The town is still characterized today by the presence of tunnels built to protect the inhabitants from frequent attacks by the Saracens. Of the ancient Basilian monastery remains a crypt dedicated to Maria SS del Gonfalone (source Wikipedia).
