Actually you drive past here, probably no one expects a grotto at this point. All the more surprising then is the whole thing. Not down the stairs, next door is a mobile way. And a nice bank.

Hidden in a small grove near the river Iller, in the district Rauns you will find a huge, stone-built Marian cave.

This structure with almost four meters height was built in the years 1916-1918 by Johann Mayr, a farmer in the community Waltenhofen. As a taciturn, closed man one knew him, who at that time with his sister farmed a nearby farm. He became suspicious when, one day, he cartwheeled up the Iller from the horse-drawn cart. Quite alone, the farmer, who died in 1953, built the tuff cave in honor of the Blessed Mother. The sweeping roof is supported by curved railroad tracks. At the beginning of the 20's he built a Way of the Cross to the Mariengrotte.

With the building, the farmer Johann Mayr gave thanks to St. Mary because he was forgotten on the list for the First World War.
