This ditch, sometimes called levada, although that is a term more typical of the island of Madeira and Galicia, construction began at the end of the 19th century at the initiative of Cristóbal Manrique de Lara. It is dug into the ground and reinforced with stone and lime and is stationary, it does not always carry water.
