thousands of kilometers of barbed wire fences run through the country. You rarely see cattle grazing. The free roaming guanacos easily jump over these obstacles. But the sick or old animals have difficulties, especially when violent gusts of wind irritate their jump. Then it's easy for them to get stuck. When they then kick and wriggle hard to free themselves, they often get more and more entangled in the wire and "cut into it". We had wire cutters in the repair kit and were able to free the animal. However, it is questionable whether it could live with the deep wound that went to the bone for long. The guanaco is a wild species within the camel family of southern and western America. It is the ancestral form of the domesticated llama. An adult animal weighs up to 90kg and can reach a speed of almost 60 km/h, but is also all-terrain on steep rocks. It lives up to 25 years and easily reaches a size of up to 120 cm. We were very careful in our act of liberation.
