The memorial is a tribute to Rykel ten Kate (1912-1992).
Rykel was a well-known nature photographer and nature lover from Zierikzee.
He played an important role in nature conservation on Schouwen-Duiveland and was one of the founders of the Nature and Bird Watch Schouwen-Duiveland.
After his death he left a legacy to nature conservation. This money has been used
to finance the lookout tower “De Zuidkaap” of Staatsbosbeheer, located further on.
The memorial column has the inscription: "With appreciation for Rykel ten Kate 1912-1992, nature lover and photographer of Schouwen-Duiveland" and was placed on 01-04-2007.
