Together with the Unterer Bockhartsee , the Naßfeld pumped storage power plant forms the top tier of the Gastein Valley power plant group.

In times of lower electricity consumption, water is pumped back into the Obere Bockhartsee with an Isogyre pump turbine from the annual storage power plant with pump operation in Naßfeld. This can then be used again to generate peak electricity at times of high demand.

In order to be able to use the pump turbine more flexibly depending on the electricity demand, the usable volume of the Naßfeld daily storage facility was increased in the summer of 2006 and the dam of the Bockhartsee annual storage facility was raised. The expanded facility was officially opened on September 28, 2007.
