If you leave the lively Bad Gastein town center behind you and continue towards the head of the valley, you will soon reach the much quieter Böckstein. The small village between steep mountain walls offers everything that the athlete and nature lover could desire: from cross-country skiing to wonderful hiking opportunities. In Altböckstein there are several old stone houses, there is a mining museum and, slightly elevated, next to an impressive hunting lodge, there is this pretty little chapel.

The pilgrimage church is already visible from afar due to its domed roof and its location. It is open but is currently undergoing renovation (July 2025). Due to the scaffolding inside, not much is visible except for the ceiling painting.
