The former OBERMAINBRÜCKE in Frankfurt has been called IGNATZ-BUBIS-BRÜCKE since 2000. It was renamed in honor of an important person not only in this city, but far beyond, who had died the year before. The Jewish Museum honors his life and work:
"Like no other Jewish personality, Ignatz Bubis shaped public life in Germany after 1945. He was a survivor of the Holocaust, an entrepreneur in the post-war period, an official of the Jewish community in Frankfurt and, from 1992 to 1999, President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany. His biography reflects the fundamental developments and conflicts of post-war society in the Federal Republic of Germany as if in a magnifying glass. With his self-image as a "German citizen of the Jewish faith," Bubis emphasized the belonging of Jews to German society even after the Holocaust. He advocated that the Jewish community should commit to a permanent life in Germany and open itself up more to the outside world."
