The desert Mandlesmühle is located northwest of Pleinfeld surrounded by forests below the dam of the Großer Brombachsee. The town and the former mill site are located on the Mandlesweiher, a chain of ponds fed by the Brombach. A road connects the town with the district road WUG 18.[2] Not far away was the now-defunct Belzmühle. The area near the Mandlesmühle is protected as an important habitat as part of the Franconian sand axis.

The mill building (Mandlesmühle 9), built in the 18th century, was entered into the Bavarian list of monuments as an architectural monument by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation under number D-5-77-161-74. Also listed is an outbuilding of the mill and a small 18th century chapel on the northern edge of the town with the monument number D-5-77-161-75.[3] See also the list of architectural monuments in Mandlesmühle.

The Großer Brombachsee is a dam whose barrier structure is an earth dam 1.7 kilometers long with an inner core seal. The multi-stage dam structure consists of a support body, dam core, sealing wall, filter layers, hearth wall with inspection corridor, surface filter and underground diaphragm wall. On the air side of the dam, at the operating outlet, is the Brombachsee power house, which can generate electricity from the water released into the lower reaches of the Brombachsee with two through-flow turbines, each with a design output of 315 kilowatts, with a useful gradient of 32 meters. The expansion flow of each of the two turbines is 1.2 m³/s, and the average annual electricity generation is 1.6 million kWh.[
