On Gløshaugen, where the church is located, was a stave church from around 1300.
On February 21, 1689, Prost Peder Resen sent a request to be allowed to demolish the old stave church and build a new church. In the same year the construction of the new church began.
With the construction of the new church in Harran, consideration was given to demolishing the church in Gløshaug. But an English sport fisherman bought the church. Today it belongs to the Grong commune.
The church is the starting point of the Nordleden, a pilgrimage route to Trondheim.
It is high above the Namsen valley, so that you have a great view of the landscape from here.

The Nordleden begins at Gløshaug Kirke, the northernmost of the Olafswege, all of which lead to Trondheim. The Nordleden is 135 km long and ends in Stiklestad at the church, said to be built on the spot where the canonized (after his death) Olav Haraldsson, then King of Norway, fell during the battle of July 29, 1030.
