The low-pressure hydropower plant on the Aare
The hydraulic power plant Rüchlig of the Axpo is a river power plant. It is located in the left, northern arm of the Aare at Zurlindeninsel, while in the right, southern arm, the weir is located. Zurlindeninsel is a semi-natural island. The Rüchlig power plant was built in 1883 by the Jura Cement factories to cover the energy needed for cement production. Since 2002, it has been owned by Axpo
(formerly NOK) and provides green belt energy for long-term security of supply (during 24 hours and 365 days a year). The power plant went through several stages of expansion, with the performance has been steadily increased.
The last complete renovation was completed in 2015. The new plant meets the highest environmental standards and is characterized by improved flood protection
and about 25% more energy production. With 64 gigawatt hours of energy produced, around 14,000 households will be supplied.
