When exactly the pagoda was built is unclear. First mentions go back to the 13th century. Since the 15th century, the main building (Preah Vihear) has housed a larger than life sleeping Buddha. In 1915 the monastery house and the main building were expanded to include a university and a library.

The Wat Preah Prom Rath Bridge over the Siem Reap River in the city center is a brightly painted bridge decorated with Buddhist symbols. It also forms an important access point to the historic Wat Preah Prom Rath temple complex, which dates back to the 13th century. The railing is adorned with a five-headed Naga (sacred multi-headed snake symbol). It symbolizes protection, water, and the rainbow bridge between humans and gods.
