Mérens-les-Vals is a rural commune of nearly 200 inhabitants located on the banks of the Ariège River, in the eponymous valley that connects Ax-les-Thermes to the Andorran border. The commune has long been known for giving its name to a breed of horse (the Mérens, small black-coated riding horses). Today, it enjoys a fine reputation as a stopping point on major hiking trails. Whether you're hiking the GR 10, 107, the GRP® Tour of the Ax Mountains, or planning a day hike, this small village tucked away in the valley is a must-see. There, you'll find a train station with regular service from Toulouse. Adjacent to the station, you'll find a pleasant bistro and mini-market. Stop by for a simple coffee break or a stock-up on food. There's no shortage of accommodation options. You can book a room or a gîte year-round. In summer, you can choose a campsite located on the left bank of the Ariège River, one kilometer north of Mérens, on the Chemin des Bonshommes, which is part of the GR 107 hiking trail.
