Originally this was the Catholic church of Waalwijk. The construction of the new church, in late Gothic style, lasted until 1520. In 1580, however, the church was severely damaged by war during the Eighty Years' War. In 1648, the church was confiscated by the Reformed.

Around 1450, the little church on the harbour, in which a special Marian altar had been standing since 1309, had become too small. That is why - and possibly also because the church was damaged during the St. Elisabeth flood - the Premonstratensians decided to build a new church on the same place
