Origin: A 9th-century Muslim fortress, built upon Roman ruins.
After the Reconquista, it fell into Christian hands and was renovated in the 13th and 15th centuries.
It held great strategic importance on the border with Portugal and in the defense of the Guadiana River.
A key location in the Battle of Medellín (1809) during the Peninsular War.
