The Play Path offers an easy hiking experience through the Ecomuseo delle Rocche del Roero, perfect for a relaxed outing. As you follow the route, you'll discover unique landscapes featuring steep cliffs and deep canyons, characteristic of the 'Rocche del Roero'. The trail itself winds through charming terraced vineyards, fragrant hazelnut groves, and peaceful wooded areas. This loop covers 3.2 miles (5.2 km) with a gentle elevation gain of 573 feet (175 metres), and you can comfortably complete it in about 1 hour and 33 minutes.
To begin your hike, head to the ample parking area just west of Santo Stefano Roero, also known as Piazza Maiolo or Piazza di S.Maria del Podio. Here, you'll find an information panel and a fountain, making it easy to get started. The best times to visit are during spring and autumn when the weather is mild, or even in winter if there's minimal snow. Keep in mind that this trail is not suitable for strollers due to its terrain, so plan accordingly for your group.
What makes this route special are the interactive educational panels you'll encounter along the way, which teach you about traditional games. You'll also pass the old aqueduct tower at Bricco Bissoca, marking the highest point of your journey and offering a visual landmark. For those interested in local history, sections of the 'Sentiero dei Piloni' with its 13 chapels are also accessible nearby, adding another layer of exploration to your visit.
