Hunterville is among the first villages created by British settlers after the Maori wars of the late 19th century. In Bruce Street, you can see funny black and white sculptures of New Zealand's most common animal, the sheep, in front of the post office. There are indeed more sheep on the North Island than people. You will find at the main intersection of the city center many cafes and hotels such as the Cranks Café, the Argyle Hotel or the Hunter & Café motel. Also note the Station motel adjoining the city's train station.
