The southern part of Mount Ruahepu indeed attracts many ski enthusiasts. The village is also known as the carrot capital of New Zealand.
Ohakune also has two Marae which are traditional Maori houses that serve as gathering places. Each tribe having its own marae. The views of the volcano here are particularly beautiful.
