First Dinkey Lake is one of numerous pristine lakes within the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness. It was named after a shepherd's dog who defended his owner from an attacking black bear. The lake is one source of the Dinkey Creek, a tributary of the north fork of the wild Kings River.
