As the name suggests, the manor house was once surrounded by a water-filled ditch fed by the Hazel and the mill race of the former castle mill. Remains of the moat were still there until the 1960s. Since the 13th century, the Lords of Trott have owned the water fortress as a fiefdom of the Hessian landgrave, the vaulted cellar probably dates back to that time. At that time, an extensive manor belonged to the moated castle. The striking hexagonal stair tower with bell dome was added in 1605 to the building that had been built a century earlier. The Trotten sold the castle and half of the manor to the Bartheld family in 1641. The coat of arms of the family, which was ennobled in 1712, still adorns the entrance to the stair tower today. For more than 200 years, until 1848, the (von) Bartheld family owned the castle and half of the manor, until they were forced to sell it due to over-indebtedness.
