The construction of the church cannot be dated precisely. Certain elements, such as the design of the northern entrance portal or the columns in the sound holes on the tower, indicate a construction in the 12th or early 13th century due to their "developed Romanesque style." The building is a simple Romanesque hall church, like many in the Saalkreis district. The structure is divided from east to west into an apse, followed by a slightly wider choir, followed by an even wider nave, which in turn is terminated by a narrower west tower. The entire building is constructed of porphyry rubble, a building material that could be extracted from the quarry directly on site. Only the ashlars forming the corners of the building, as well as the door and window jambs and arches, are made of sandstone.
