This cathedral was built by the Italian architect Aldo Spirito, in Abidjan on the initiative of President Félix Houphouët-Boigny. The first stone of this cathedral was blessed on May 11, 1980 by Pope John Paul II during his first pastoral visit to Côte d'Ivoire. He also consecrated the building completed on August 10, 1985 during a second visit to this country. The cost of carrying out this architectural work is estimated at 6 billion CFA francs. Saint Paul's Cathedral is built on an area of nine hectares, on the former site of the prefecture and the former prison. Aldo Spirito received the "Europe Architecture 1982" prize for this building. It is a 4,200 m² building in a triangular shape, with a capacity of 4,500 seats and 1,500 standing places. The triangular shape refers to the Holy Trinity. The construction of the Cathedral was entirely financed by the populations through a collection organized in 1963 and 1964.
The Saint-Paul cathedral of Abidjan is the emanation of the Saint-Paul du Plateau church, the first buildings of which were built in Abidjan in 1913.
