On the west side of the Schildmeer lies Tetjehorn, an area that was already known centuries ago. According to stories, there was once a stronghold here where a robber knight lived. After his death, his wife, Taitjemui, took over the plundering. She was known as ruthless and terrorized the lake for years. It is said that her ghost still wanders around in bad weather.

Since 2000, Tetjehorn has been part of the nature reserve 't Roegwold. It is now the largest reed marsh in Groningen, rich in birds such as the bittern, bearded tit, porcelain chicken and even the sea eagle.
