Donnerbrunnen on Neuer Markt

The fountain was built by Georg Raphael Donner on behalf of the municipality of Vienna in 1737-39 (the first public commission of a secular nature to decorate a square in Vienna). For the figures on the edge of the basin - symbolizing the rivers Traun (youth), Enns (old man), March and Ybbs (female figures) - Donner only created the models, the execution was the responsibility of Johann Nikolaus Moll. In the middle of the water basin is the figure of Providentia (Providence), on the base there are four putti.

The original figures of the rivers (made of lead) are in the Baroque Museum in the Lower Belvedere. In 1770, on the orders of Maria Theresa, they were removed because of their nudity, taken to the material depot of the civic armory and handed over to the sculptor Johann Martin Fischer to be melted down; However, he had them restored, aware of their artistic value, and had them re-erected in 1801. In 1873 they were replaced by bronze copies.
