From High Camp to the Lower Viewpoint there are alternate sections of steep stairs and a dirt track along the crest of the mountain. The views are spectacular, especially if you do this section at dawn, when the sky is completely clear and the snow-capped peaks sparkle in the first rays of the sun.

If you are attempting to get to viewpoint for sunrise (which will be on your right as you climb) then following the purpose built steps in the dark is very straightforward.

There are one or two spots where the steps are missing and make sure to notice the blue sign that shows you the 'easy' and advisable route and the 'danger' route which involves a shirt but very steep and slightly exposed loose scramble.
