The Sauerland Ring connects the cities of Finnentrop, Eslohe, Schmallenberg and Lennestadt with 84 kilometers of track over old railway lines.
The history of the old railway line goes back to the 1860s, where there were the first plans for the construction of the route. Due to various problems in the construction of the two tunnels at Finnentrop and Kückelheim, however, the inauguration of the route had to wait until 1911. Already in the second half of the 20th century, the route for passenger transport was already uneconomical and also the freight traffic was set and relocated at the turn of the century. We cyclists today can look forward to this wonderfully quiet and mostly flat to busy loop and various relics from the time of the good old railway.
