Oedheim Castle, often called Bautzenschloss, is a castle on the banks of the Kocher River in the municipality of Oedheim in Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
It can be traced back to a castle complex from the Staufer period and was the ancestral seat of the Capler von Oedheim, called Bautz. The castle is now privately owned and not open to the public.
The complex, which was first mentioned in a document in 1202, was probably built by the Lords of Weinsberg in the last third of the 12th century, at the latest in the 13th century, in any case after the Staufer victory over the Welfs in the Battle of Weinsberg in 1140. This dating is also supported by the typical construction as shield wall castle supported.
In Oedheim, the Öhringen–Neuenstadt–Gundelsheim road crossed the Kocher using a ferry. The road was of strategic importance for the Weinsbergers in securing their rule north of Kocher and Jagst. The task of the castle was to secure the ferry, which was in the extension of today's Fahrgasse until 1765. In addition, it was probably the seat of a bailiwick. The Staufer-era fortifications included a fortified residential tower (today's south-west building), inner courtyard, castle wall and a neck moat.
It is unclear when the Capler family, documented in Oedheim since 1235 and whose representatives probably came from the Gmünd area as vassals of the Lords of Weinsberg, were enfeoffed with the castle.
