It is a former moated castle built around 1200. Since the 17th century, the district court is located in the former moated castle. Until 2009, it served as a prison. From the castle are still the gatehouse and some outbuildings preserved.

The moated castle was protected in the north by an extensive swamp area. Access was through the outer bailey in the south. At the beginning of the 20th century, the castle was clearly recognizable as an irregular square surrounded by moats. In addition, part of the curtain wall and the inner pointed arch of the gate still existed. Today there are only a few remains of the castle, such as a moat and a gate house at Amtsgasse 1.

During excavations in the area of the outer bailey in 2004/05, the Helmstedt district archeology recorded remains of the oldest medieval buildings from around 1200 in the form of post pits and wattle walls. In 2005, investigations within the main castle were able to prove the foundations of a tower-like building in addition to other building structures.
