Tips

  • It's been progressing step by step for a little over a year. The memorial wall for the vagrant couple named Adam and Eve, Anton and Josefa Micheel, on Gütersloher Strasse is still incomplete. But that is about to change. Completion is planned for the end of the year.
Under the aegis of the Herzebrock local history association, the wall evokes awareness of the couple Anton Micheel and Maria Theresia Josepha Micheel, née Rickers, known as Adam and Eva. Not without reason: Anton Micheel, nickname Tönne, was born in June 1855 as the fifth child of the carpenter and farmer Caspar Micheel in the Pixel farm. Right at the location of the memorial wall: His parents' house was diagonally behind it on Gütersloher Straße and dated from the middle of the 19th century. The Bücker beverage retailer had been using the building since the 1970s, and it was demolished in 2019 after unsuccessful attempts to relocate the four-poster house.
However, the house has not completely disappeared: a fragment from the inside of Anton Micheel's parents' house is part of the memorial wall. Ralf Ostermann, secretary, and the chairman, Hans-Hermann Strickmann, showed the construction progress at the general meeting of the local history association. The former portal is framed in corten steel, in which the names Adam and Eve have been laser cut. In the meantime, the compartments have been lined with historically correct brickwork, and the forecourt is paved. Window sills were recently added. The information boards are still missing: the history of the house will be documented on the left, in the middle a large photo of the couple and on the right its history as Westphalian outsiders who moved from farm to farm as a "wandering news center" in the eastern Münsterland.
