S. Amato is a town in the municipality of Vinci located on the slopes of Montalbano amidst splendid olive groves. It is located on the road that goes up from Anchiano, where Leonardo's birthplace is located, and which leads to the Montalbano ridge.
This church, which tradition says was built by Countess Matilde di Canossa in 1100, retains much of its medieval structures and is a true jewel of Romanesque architecture. From the small square it overlooks, you can enjoy an unparalleled view of the Arno Valley below and the Fucecchio Marshes.
