The center has something of an open-air museum or outlet shopping center. The buildings are replicas of houses that either burned down or were demolished elsewhere in Iceland. Each house has a plaque with its history. A small Skyr Museum is set up in the basement of the former dairy (now a food hall). It's truly lovingly designed, and the collection of historical exhibits is impressive – unfortunately, most of them lack explanations, making it somewhat difficult for the general public.

Phase 2 of the center is currently under construction.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Are there specific walking routes or loops within Selfoss Town Center?

Yes, beyond general strolls through the New Old Town, you can enjoy pleasant walking paths along the Ölfusá River. A popular option is a loop that incorporates the Ölfusarbru Suspension Bridge, offering scenic views of the river and connecting to paths leading towards the Hellisskógur Forest north of town. These walks are generally easy and suitable for most fitness levels.

What are some family-friendly activities available in Selfoss Town Center?

Selfoss Town Center offers several family-friendly options. Children will enjoy exploring the unique architecture of the New Old Town, which feels like an open-air museum. The interactive Skyrland Exhibition in the cellar of the Old Dairy provides an engaging look at Iceland's traditional superfood. Additionally, the local geothermal swimming pool is a fantastic option with outdoor facilities, water slides, and hot tubs for all ages.

Are the walking paths in Selfoss Town Center accessible for wheelchairs or strollers?

The main areas of the New Old Town are generally paved and flat, making them accessible for wheelchairs and strollers. Paths along the Ölfusá River are also mostly well-maintained. However, some sections, especially those leading into Hellisskógur Forest, might become uneven or unpaved. It's always best to check local conditions for specific routes.

Is Selfoss Town Center suitable for a winter visit, and what outdoor activities are available then?

Absolutely! While summer offers longer daylight hours, Selfoss Town Center has its own charm in winter. The New Old Town remains open, providing cozy cafes and shops. Outdoor activities might include crisp walks along the Ölfusá River, though paths can be icy. The geothermally heated swimming pool is a particularly inviting retreat during colder months, offering a warm and relaxing experience.

Where can I find parking when visiting Selfoss Town Center?

Parking is generally available around the New Old Town area. There are designated parking lots and street parking options. While not usually an issue, it's advisable to arrive earlier during peak tourist season (summer) or on weekends to secure a convenient spot, especially if you plan to spend several hours exploring.

Are there any dog-friendly trails or areas near Selfoss Town Center?

Many of the outdoor walking paths along the Ölfusá River and within the Hellisskógur Forest are suitable for dogs, provided they are kept on a leash. While the New Old Town itself is an outdoor area, individual establishments (shops, cafes, restaurants) will have their own policies regarding pets inside. Always ensure to clean up after your dog.

What are some recommended cafes or eateries in Selfoss Town Center for after a walk?

The New Old Town is home to a variety of cafes and restaurants perfect for relaxing after a walk. The Old Dairy building houses a lively food hall with multiple vendors offering diverse cuisine. You'll also find independent cafes scattered throughout the area, many serving traditional Icelandic pastries, coffee, and light meals.

What geological features can be observed on trails near Selfoss?

While Selfoss itself is not known for dramatic geological formations like some other parts of Iceland, the town is situated on the banks of the powerful Ölfusá River, Iceland's largest river by volume, which is a significant hydrological feature. The surrounding region, particularly towards the Golden Circle, offers insights into volcanic activity, geothermal areas, and rift valleys, which can be explored on day trips from Selfoss.

How does hiking near Selfoss compare to hiking in Hveragerði?

Hiking near Selfoss Town Center primarily focuses on gentle riverside walks and forest trails, such as those in Hellisskógur, offering pleasant, easy strolls. Hveragerði, often called the 'Flower Town,' is renowned for its geothermal park and offers more challenging and unique hiking experiences, including trails to hot springs where you can bathe in a warm river. Selfoss provides a more urban-integrated walking experience, while Hveragerði is geared towards more direct interaction with geothermal landscapes.

What is the 'New Old Town' project, and what can I expect to see there?

The 'New Old Town' is a unique redevelopment project in Selfoss where brand-new reconstructions of historical Icelandic buildings have been erected. These buildings, designed with traditional architectural styles, now house modern shops, restaurants, cafes, and hotels. You can expect to see beautifully crafted structures, each often with a plaque detailing its history, creating an atmosphere that blends historical aesthetics with contemporary amenities. It's recognized as the first environmentally certified town center in the world.

Are there any hidden walking trails or less-known scenic viewpoints around Selfoss?

While the main riverside paths are well-known, exploring the lesser-trafficked trails within Hellisskógur Forest can offer a more secluded experience. For scenic viewpoints, walking across the Ölfusarbru Suspension Bridge provides excellent panoramic views of the Ölfusá River and the surrounding landscape. Further afield, the region around Selfoss is dotted with quiet country roads and paths that can lead to unexpected vistas, particularly along the riverbanks away from the town center.
