Who was Joe English?

Some explanation: The father of Joe English (born in Bruges in 1882) was an Irishman who was married to a Flemish woman. Joe was naturalized as a Belgian and worked closely with Juliaan Devriendt in Antwerp, a center of Flemishization.

In 1914 he was mobilized. From the end of 1915 he worked as an artist in Veurne, developing into a prominent soldier at the front. He designed the typical hero tombstones for the Flemish fallen.

He died at the age of 36 in the army hospital l'Océan in Vinkem of an untreated appendicitis in the night of August 31, 1918. He was buried in the Belgian military cemetery of Steenkerke. The very first Iron Pilgrimage took place there in 1920 at his grave. In 1930 he was buried in the crypt of the Yser Tower.

Thanks to his friend Sam(uel) De Vriendt, a number of oil paintings and watercolors depicting Veurne during the war are permanently exhibited in Veurne's town hall.
