Until the end of the 18th century, the village belonged to the Upper County of Sponheim and was under the administration of the Oberamt Birkenfeld as part of the Hambach care. In 1607 Hattgenstein had 21 families and in 1699 seven families, in 1790 the town had 177 inhabitants.

In 1794, the left bank of the Rhine was taken by French revolutionary troops. From 1798 to 1814, Hattgenstein belonged to the canton of Birkenfeld in the Saar department. Based on the agreements made at the Congress of Vienna (1815), the region came under the Oldenburg Principality of Birkenfeld in 1817. The municipality was assigned to the mayor's office of Leisel in Birkenfeld. From 1918 Hattgenstein belonged to the Oldenburg district of Birkenfeld and in 1937 came to the Prussian district of Birkenfeld. Hattgenstein has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1946.
