The Roman aqueduct from the Eifel to Cologne is the most important technical monument of antiquity north of the Alps – and also the longest. Its total length is 95 kilometers – including all supply lines, approximately 130 kilometers. This makes it the third-longest in the entire Roman Empire. The "Roman Canal," as it is known in the region, is one of the greatest engineering feats of antiquity. Its construction and surveying techniques amaze both laypeople and experts. It is an archaeological monument of international standing – also because important parts have been preserved.

20 million liters of water daily for the Colonia
It is well known that the Roman population on the Lower Rhine placed great importance on maintaining their lifestyle. This included clean, fresh drinking water. With a flow rate of 250 liters per second, the Eifel pipeline delivered up to 20 million liters of water daily to the provincial capital – according to calculations by Prof. Dr. Klaus Grewe, who researched the pipeline for many years as an archaeologist and surveyor at the LVR.
