The 380-hectare nature reserve protects what is left of what used to be an extensive upland moor in the transition from the Delmenhorster Geest to the Weser Marshes. The area, which was formerly severely affected by drainage and peat extraction, is now on the way to regeneration after rewetting and extensification. The recovering high moor areas provide a habitat for a large number of animal and plant species typical of high moors, but are also a retreat for species from the surrounding intensively used cultural landscape. There are various peat mosses, cotton grass, broom and bell heather and the gall bush in partially extensive stocks.
