The Fort of Napoleon is smaller than those of San Martín and San Carlos, because although it was thought to be the largest in the area and consisted of different buildings, it was never finished. It was a large solid work, with several buildings, built under the supervision of the Count of Cafarelli, who was the general commander of Napoleon's troops in northern Spain. Some buildings that served as accommodation for officers and soldiers and the Rouget Battery, built in 1811, are still preserved. The guard booth, unique from this period in Cantabria, is also preserved.

Hiking
The Fuerte de Napoleon (formerly called the Fort of Mazo) was built by the French in 1810 to defend the north from Santoña to Playa de Berria. Unfortunately the fort was closed and there was no sign stating if and when it could be visited. The fort is surrounded by forest and therefore not easy to photograph from the outside
