Old Elbe is the term for cut off, former river sections of the Elbe (arms), as they arise at the touch of two river loops (meanders), after Laufverlagerungen or Flussiegradigungen.
The longest piece "Old Elbe" is the Dornburger Alte Elbe, it branches off southeast of Magdeburg at Dornburg from the main stream and runs in many slings about 20 km parallel to the Elbe; it ends at the height of Magdeburg-Salbke. Near Plötzky branches off the Elbe-Umflutkanal from the Old Elbe and arrives at Lostau (northeast of Magdeburg) back to the Elbe. In the section from the Umflutkanal the Dornburger Alte Elbe is now threatened by siltation due to the closure of the fresh water inflow.
The German Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation has been campaigning for the revitalization of Dornburger Alten Elbe since 2010 in order to stop the process of silting up.Source and further information:
