In the 1920s, the lignite mines between Gostau and Röcken not only came across black gold, but also a vein of gravel. The Werschen-Weißenfelser-Braunkohlen AG built the gravel washer near the tracks of the Röcker train station. Different types of sand, gravel and crushed stone of all sizes were washed here and loaded onto freight trains. The water tower erected in 1927 on the Kipphalde supplied the gravel washer with water. In 1929, the half-exploited opencast mine was shut down, so the function of the gravel washer was no longer necessary.
