Den Diel nature property is sometimes referred to as part of the De Maat nature reserve, but it is actually also a piece in itself, north of the Herentals-Bocholt canal. In the moist peat area in the middle of Den Diel there are remnants of old spriet pits (sprit is a kind of lignite). These are now ponds and fens with a special fauna and flora, which are known for some species of rare dragonflies.De Maat is - strictly speaking - on the other side of the canal. These shallow fens are located in the Den Diel nature reserve. They are remnants of old wells. Spriet is a type of lignite that was mined here during the war years. Den Diel is also known for rare dragonflies. There are more than anywhere else in Flanders.
