    Office of Federal President Steinmeier

Bellevue Palace is the official residence, but not the residence, of the Federal President. Federal President Roman Herzog was the only head of state to work and live in Bellevue Palace.

Since 2004, the “Villa Wurmbach” in Dahlem has been the official residence of the incumbent Federal President. The house had been owned by the federal government since 1962 and had served various purposes for decades. Horst Köhler was the first Federal President to live there. His successors, Federal President Christian Wulff, Federal President Joachim Gauck and Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, did the same.

The house has an eventful history. In 2016, the Federal President's Office commissioned a research report on the service villa at the end of the Weimar Republic and at the beginning of the Nazi dictatorship - especially on the fate of its Jewish previous owners Hugo and Maria Heymann. Prof. Dr. Michael Wildt, Professor of German History in the 20th Century with a focus on National Socialism at the Institute of History at the Humboldt University in Berlin, has examined the history of the villa and the fate of the couple in two works (main report, follow-up research). The follow-up research was commissioned in 2017 with the aim of evaluating further sources, in particular to clarify the circumstances of the sale in 1933 as much as possible and to gain more detailed information about the purchaser Waldemar Gerber.
