Lägerdorf is characterized by its rich chalk deposits. The chalk originated in the so-called Cretaceous Age (135-65 million years ago). At that time, northern Europe was covered by a warm, shallow "Chalk Sea" that was about 1,000 meters deep. Microscopically small, single-celled algae (coccolithophores) floating in the sea formed to protect them
tiny limestone (armor). After they died, they sank to the bottom and formed several hundred meters during the Cretaceous period
