Chalk and clay are important raw materials for cement production. The first chalk pits (from 1862) are simple earthen holes with a diameter of around 12 meters and a depth of up to 15 metres. The chalk is laboriously broken out of the wall by human hands in tiers with poles and pickaxes, thrown up with shovels and transported away with wheelbarrows.

From 1883 steam trains drove into the pit. However, the chalk is still mined by hand and the carts are loaded with shovels.
